Lads,
I have a 1971 Ute B120, in which the tired old 1200 is coming out and an A15 going in. I have a couple of queries:
1. Apparently its better to use the 1200 flywheel and camshaft in the A15???
2. Am going for a 1200GX carby and manifold set up. Anybody out there had dramas with this. I have heard good and bad.
3. Crossmember. I have had a look at all the dicussion on this, but from what I understand an A15 will not fit on an older model ute crossmember, but will on the later model 1980 onwards??
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
cheers,
Daz

I've swapped my a12 for an a14 in a 78 ute. It went in with no mods.

i run a modified a15 in a sedan and ther were not many dramas in getting it in you may just need to modify the engine mounts by adding a plate to slide the engine back or forward i cant remember which way.
if you want to get any serious power run a set of twin 45's or 40's webers, they go really well with this done to them. try to get your hands on webers and not dellortos, dellortos are to hard to find some one to tune them, there is a place in melbourne that will do it though

The crossmember & the engine were changed at the same time that the 120Y came out. I think that was in '74. Since you have a REAL 1200 ute, you have two options
1 Secure a crossmember from a '74 or later ute & it will bolt right in, or
2. Modify the right side mounting "tower" to accomidate the slightly repositioned mounting on the block.
You will need to do some wiring alterations to accomodate the altenator which is positioned high on the right instead of low on the left as it now is in your car.
If you are going to pull the cam from the A15, then get yourself a new or reground replacement & do it right. The cam from your old A12 will not work as the A15 has the distributor further back than the early A12 & it requires another drive gear on the cam that the early one does not have.
With the A15, you may well benefit from the removal of the 4.11 to 1 diff ratio & the fitting of a 3.9 to 1 diff from a 910 Bluebird.
I kind of like the GX intake setup for a mild sports road engine. They may not be as impressive as some, but they work well. Chris

Guys,
Thanks for all the info, this is a champion site. Will try to source the later model ute crossmember but this will be difficult to find. May have a look through some of the wreckers in country SA and VIC as they sometimes have more dato ute parts then their city counterparts. Also after a steering box as my current one is looking rather shagged, on the outside at least.
cheers,
Daz

You had better make sure which city you want as there is more than a tankfull of fuel between them.

1200RC Sure they made LATE model 1200GX's They were available in 120Y's These are so new that they should be almost out of warranty by now. These later engines used the square top carbs & there was a 120Y GX coupe running around here for a number of years. If i can unearth the pictures, i will scan them & post one or two.
