Yes, poor timing will use more fuel.

The air filter isn't a problem (it's putting your foot down more often because the car is now more fun to drive-- that uses more fuel). It's probably unlikely the air filter will give you more performance ... the stock air filter is fairly large (relatively to the A12's air intake).
