sammy, an engine needs three things to start (and a properly tuned carb is not one of them):
1. Fuel (must get some fuel down into the carb), hence the spray ether idea, or your idea of pouring a little gas down the carb
2. Spark. If you pull a plug wire off and put it on a spare plug, when cranking over you can see if it sparks, that's a good sign
3. Compression. Too much gas can wash off the oil seal of the rings and lose your compression. Dripping or squirting a little bit of motor oil in the spark plug holes is not a bad idea.
Your best bet at this point is to borrow a compression gauge and see how much compression there really is. You should have at least 90 in all four cylinders. If it is lower or one cylinder is lower, that's your problem.
