Everybody has their own opinions and this is mine. The main reason I don't like drifting is because it is a show off sport, much in the same way that ricing is and it jacks up cars. Whoever's drift looks the best wins, I just don't see much substance to that. If I had a sponsor that pays for the car I would do it cause it looks like fun, but there's no way in hell I'm going to spend my own money to get out there and crash up my Datto that I've spent tons of time and money on just to look good for the crowd!
I don't know about others but when I put a lot of time and money into my cars, I get very attached to them and I have a lot of respect for them when they're finished. I will race it and put it through hell, but all within reason. I flip out when I find a mere scratch on my car, I couldn't handle crashing it up drifting.
I agree that one form of motorsport or another wears out a car, but none of them, besides demolition derby, do it quicker than drifting. I have drag and street raced my cars quite a bit and at the end of the day the most damage I've ever done is a tranny or driveshaft. If you go out drifting you ARE going to smack up your body and body/frame work is not as easy or as cheap as mechanical parts especially on 20-30 year old Datsuns! If you want to go drift a classic Datsun I will be all for it and cheer you on, but don't expect me to do the same with my car.
