With the setup you have i would do all the prep work, primer, filler, etc...

(sand sand sand), rinse repeat.

until you have it a smooth as a babys bum, then take it to a panel shop and get a 2pak
colour cot done, and it won't cost you a hell of a lote more than the cost of the paint.

you will be far happier with the finish that way.
