If you are completely unfamiliar with points, to the point that you don't even know what they are, then the first & most important tool that you will need is a workshop manual. Something that you should have bought when you got the car

This will show you everything that you need to know as the setting, or replacing of the contact points is only the first step. This should be followed by an ignition timing & idle speed adjustment. Once this is set, you will need to do this only every 5,000k or so.
