I think your budget is totally realistic, good registered Datsuns can still be bought from $1000 up.

Shaun recently sold an A14 turbo on this site for $1000.

I think an A15 with electronic ignition sold on Ebay for about $500 last week.

You can buy a really good Datsun for a lot less than $5000.
