Ported vacuum comes from a port in the carburetor, just above the throttle plate. It's not connected directly to the intake manifold.

You can hook distributor vacuum advance directly to the intake manifold, but in that case, be sure to adjust idle air/fuel mixture with the advance line disconnected.

They switched to ported vacuum for emissions control reasons.
