Depends what coil you have.

Some coils can handle 12V all the time..

The resistor-equipped ones can't. They can only handle 12V during start cranking.

Removing the resistor, will make the coil go into meltdown on a long drive.

Get the specs on the coil that you've bought with the MSD box. That will tell you whether it needs a ballast resistor or not.
