The brake light means that the fluid level is low.
For me, that meant that the rear brakes were completely wore out, and so when you break hard, the rear wheel cylinders fill up and take the reservoir down to make the light come on, then when you let off, after a few moments the light goes off.

I'd check the condition of the rear brakes, and make sure both reservoirs are filled properly.
