This bloke must be pretty old as MacPherson struts were a production reality in 1954 Ford Zephyr's & their four cylinder counterpart, the easily forgotten Ford Consul. Back then they were commonly refered to as 'wet legs'
This means that the earliest design exercises would have begun sometime around 1950, or perhaps even earlier.
