unless it's something i've never seen before


appears to be a coolant passage, the exhaust manifold is on the otherside of the engine. on my air injection system, the air went directly in to the exhaust manifold, that would be really odd if the air went inside the head to the exhaust manifold.

i think i've seen water outlet gaskets with that passage, i can't imagine it being anything other than a coolant passage.
