Ok, I've recently become a 'know it all' on this subject.

You cannot really adjust the steering box at all. The bits that wear out are not adjustable.

The adjuster screw at the top is used to adjust the endfloat on the sector shaft.

The shims between the steering box and the steering column tube, adjusts the end float on the steering column.

The wormgear does wear out.. But I've found the sector shaft bearings are the major contributor to sloppy steering. Especially if you've already replaced the tierod ends.

Loosen off the sector shaft adjuster and wiggle the pitman arm, which is connected to sector shaft. If the sector shaft moves side to side, the bearings need replacement.

These bearings are plain brass bearings and are dfficult to remove without damaging. So be sure to order the new ones before pulling out the steering and pulling it all apart. Having the factory manual will help you put it back together within spec.

You will need a large bearing puller to get the pitman arm off, so that you can disassemble the box enough replace these bearings.

The ball bearings in the top and bottom of the steering box shouldn't need replacing. The ballnut bearings also shouldn't need replacing.

So there. The tech section is wrong. The adjuster only sets sector shaft end float. By tightening it, it makes the steering more stiff because the sector shaft will have far too much axial preload.
