Give the man a break. If you are in the market for one of these, & feel that the price is more than you can afford, or is above market value, then make what you feel is a realistic offer after getting a bit of background first.
Be prepared to adjust your offer a little, & if you can't do a deal, say 'thanks for the opportunity, & please call me if you change your mind' then make sure that he has your contact details. Most sellers prefer to deal with serious buyers, even if they drive a hard bargain. Bagging someone because he has offered up something with a price that allows him room to move is just plain silly, after all, everybody adds a bit to the asking price of their car to allow for some haggling don't they, ... then why should this be any different?
If you don't want it, then don't say anything, just go & read another thread & be happy.
Of course, these gearboxes are MUCH less expensive in the US, so just think of the savings to be made by booking a flight from Australia to the US to buy one.
Market forces drive the price, ... supply & demand, it's as simple as that.
