a knock sensor would be part of a engine management system, but if someone wants to make one that will dump the vacuum advance ( maybe even retard the mech advance???? ) as knock gets louder, that should be fairly easy.
A knock sensor is tied to the engine management computer. It can not retard the vacuum advance or the machanical advance, it provides an input to the computer, & the computer retards the spark as long as it has full control of the spark.
If your spark is completely controlled by the distributor, then a knock sensor will be of very limited value.
