if i were u i would check the number of teeth between the cams and the crank as well... even 1 tooth out can have an adverse effect... i would think that the enginge would still start unless it's way out....


sorry i just read it again...
did u say the locating half moon was missing on ur old motors cam???
if so u probably had it tuned originally with the cas way out of alignment...
