i put the gearbox in after i put the engine in.

lets face it, putting the gearbox in a datsun is a fairly easy task. i got the splines lined up on the second "jiggle".

im not saying it can't be done with the gearbox on, but im saying it might take just as long (or longer) to get it in as 1 (without scratching you say) as it would to put them in seperately.

thats my 2c
