the higher you lift the pivot (fulcrum) point means there is more "stick" below it ... this means that the end in the box will move further with less movement at the top (gearknob) needed.
did a quick search and found an eeaaaaaarly thread by feral and he suggests about 1cm lift ... i'd probably look at up to 2cm max.
with the amount of play in an Aseries box i think making the shift movement too small would actually make it harder to find the gears properly due to the 'slack' shift pattern the box already has in regards to definite gates for each gear
