more information i discovered today thati havnt found elsewhere.
The a12 alternator bracket (right hand side) does not fit the a15 block. the block doesnt have the required holes.
However, its still possible to mount it there.
Im using the a12 bracket, slotting the holes to fit and make the alt pulley in line with crank etc.
A12 and a15 drive belts arent the same length.(a15 = longer)
The coolant inlet at the bottom of the block (right hand side) is a different length on the a15 than the a12 making it hard to fit alt on a15 in a12 place.
I cut and welded my bracket to fit, easy.
When you say A12, do you mean 1974 & later A12, or 1970 to '73 Datsun 1200 engine?
You also mention a coolant inlet on the right side of the engine, but there is no coolant inlet on the right, It's on the left of the engine.
From what I can make of it, you are probably trying to use the alternator bracket from your original 1200 engine, which is mounted on the left side of the block, & trying to fit it to the airconditoner compressor mounting boss' which are also on the left side of an A15 engine.
Different setup altogether & as you have discovered, it won't fit up.
The [1974 onwards] A12 alternator, is of course in the same place as the A15.
Right & left are always determined as if siting in the car unless specifically mentioned otherwise. After all, our cars are 'right drive'.
