I'm pretty sure that the 1200 starter is the same size as the 1000 one, but it has four brushes inside instead of the 1000's two.
I remember that I converted my original 1000 starter by adding the two extra brushes as the end plate was made to take them, they were simply never fitted to any 1000 starter that I dismantled.

Yes, the starter is difficult to change, but with the benefit of experience, I learned which way to twist & turn to get it out & back in agan without resorting to more than a dozen or so swear words, & I was dealing with a 1200 engine & trans in a B10 chassis.
