Well, one way to ease the pain of decision will be to contact MadDat to see if they have a kit, or individual parts to do the conversion. [or any other company for that matter] If a Kit is available, then the instalation will be little more difficult than a stock engine replacement.
I run both engines & I absolutely love my A series. The old GX in my 1000 sedan was a real eye opener & was as peppy as hell, but wasn't really a cruiser.
The L20B in my 200B wagon is dead stock [elect ign excepted] & pulls like a train. Not quick in stock trim, but as flexible as hell, it'll pull from less than 1000 rpm & it often does because I'm too bloody lazy to shift down. L20B's make you like that. My trip to Adelaide & back a few years ago confirmed it as an out & out cruiser, & in that role, it was perfect.
If you go with the L series, then I suggest an L18 in twin carb SSS guise. The Japs loved 'em & so will you.
The beauty of this decision is that there is NO WRONG CHOICE if you make it for the right reasons. As long as the engine is Datsun, it's all good.
