The following is pirated directly from a post by Eddie Rattley [Ratdat] on Automotive Helper.com He was responding to a question about the J18 engine, but it relates to the A series engine in the big picture.

The J series engine is devoped from Datsun's earlier E1 engine fitted to the Datsun 312 and 410.
The E1 is basically an Austin/ Morris B series engine but Japanese built.

Jumping back a couple of posts... Dodgeman, how similer are the J series and Austin A series?
Well, as Eddie pointed out, the 'E1' & the subsequent 'J' series were derived from the Austin/Morris 'B' series engine, ... not the Austin/ Morris 'A' series so I doubt that anything is interchangeable except perhaps the spark plugs & the thermostat.
The BMC 'B' series was used in things like Morris Majors & Austin Lancers, Austin 1800's & MGB's, but definately not mini's
