I was thinking about a series motors the other day. (Which I tend to do a lot) I was planning to pull the head of an A14 in the shed, to put on my blown A15.
After looking at the manifolds, it occurred to me that the A14 manifolds use a much larger hotbox than the A12's. So how about making a 6+mm plate to blank the hotbox flange on the exhaust manifold, then adapting a turbo flange onto this plate? You'd need to make a new inlet manifold, due to the turbo being quite close to the head. You'd also need to blank off the original frontpipe conection. (Not hard since it's got three bolts) It wouldn't be that hard to make a new dump pipe off the turbo to run down next to where the manifold ussually connects to the exhaust. You'd have to remove the flapper valve too. An internal wastegate might be thwarted by the need to rotate the compressor housing to make the turbo discharge point up. (kinda important on a drawthrough) since the wastegate pushrod diaphram often attaches to the compressor housing. But this wouldnt be a problem, beacuse you could use the factory outlet port to mount an external wastegate. And then plumb it straight back into the pipe which would be runinng quite near. That would give all the benifits of reduced gas turbulance in the dump pipe.
The gas from number four would have to travel a bit further, but probably not as far as it would need to travel on a J-pipe set up. Remember the less distance the gas travels before the turbo, the better.
I'm going to take the H82 (A14) ex manifold over to the workshop over the weekend, and try a few turbo's on to see what the fit is like.

What do you think, am I onto a winner,or am I a crackpot?
