I'm Not sure about that one either. I've had a couple of cams reground, (lumpy nasty grinds) and the grinder's specs for tappet clearance have been .016. They haven't been noisy. On a really nasty motor the extra lash can allow the valve a whisker more "seat time" to aid heat transfer.
