I have no idea how responsive they are to mods, but if you throw the usual at them, you should get the motor moviing.

Head work, and a bigger cam and carb should help, but then again the 1500 is a mid sized ute, so weight may be an issue.

Perhaps a L20 swap might be an easy way to power.
