Years ago I visited the owner of the wide body and was told that the difference was easily evidenced by trying to fit an original coupe back seat - it was not wide enough.

If this was the truth (and I had no reason to doubt him) then the difference was not because of moving the rails in.

Such a mod (if it is legit) means it was a true extra width body that allowed a wider rear track under 'stock' sheetmetal.

This would not be repeated for 100 different vehicles in order to gain a Bathurst entry - just possibly a factory 'cheat' that might help the 1200 punch even further above it's weight. And we all know there were a few of those tricks done back in the day...
