Input shaft is the same also. It's only the front housing that's different.

The L series gearbox's can't be used on an A series. The L series input spigot is of the larger diameter that the O.D. of the A series spigot bush. I used an L series 63A to replenish my fully fisted 63A A series box. I had to get a machinest (Dad ) to turn down the spigot bush journal to the same diameter as the a series one. As well as cut it down by about 15mm. (Approx)

Also, there is a reasonable amount of disassembly required to get the front input shaft out of the gearbox. You can't just pull the front bell housing off, tap out the roll pin from the selector fork and pull it off. The gear on the cluster overhangs the top of the input shaft (over the gear that the selector ring engages with) which prevents you from pulling it off the end of the main shaft. You'll likely need to remove the tail housing, and dismantle ALL the gears from the main shaft. Then take the circlip off the main shaft. (I can't recall off the top of my head if thats under a plate screwed to the center plate, or if that plate is on the top side of the center plate) Anyway you must remove the circlip from the mainshaft on the rear side of the center bearing, then you've got to drive the rear of the mainshaft forwards far enough to enable the removal of the cluster before you''ll be able to get the input shaft out.
Not a big deal if you've had some experience with gearboxes, but not a 5 minute job for a novice.
