There's no way they can pass the blame if they rear ended you - it's an automatic 85 / 15 split.

I was rear ended a while ago in my wife's brand new car, and the other driver squeezed past me (I was in a turn left any time lane) and drove off - I got their plate and a real good look at the car, and reported it immediately to the cops. I am presuming it must have been a 'person of interest' to them (informant / mobster / under cover cop?), because they won't give us any information about the accident investigation, the initial cop who we reported it to got a real worried look on her face when she brought the vehicle up on the computer and said that she needed to speak to her superior. After speaking to her superior she wouldn't say anything else about it and we have had no information since.

A friend of ours who is a cop had a look at the file while at work and said that there's a problem with it, the detectives are looking into it and she can't tell us anything else. Nearly a year has now passed, so I presume that nothing is going to happen.

We obviously had insurance, so it's not that big a deal, except that we have lost our no claim bonus and are $500 out of pocket (for an accident that would have cost us nothing if the cops had 'found' the guy who hit us).
