An "SL" alternator is internally regulated. Be sure to disconnect the Datsun 1200 regulator when fitting an SL type.

No need for a stronger battery, in fact I say use a smaller lighter battery. We are using lawn-tractor batteries and very small car batteries. The 1994 Datsun 1200 pickup uses tiny Japan battery type 38B19L. http://datsun1200.com/modules/mediawiki/index.php?title=Battery

You may with to use larger batter if you want to leave headlights on with engine off. Or if you have a high-powered radio that you play with engine off.
