I agree with your concerns Clyons. but the answer to most of your concerns are only donate what you don’t want anything for. No potential loss then. I also expect that the vast majority of parts that Dundee will have will be individual components rather than whole carbs.
Mike will have his opinions, but this what I would say if I was him.
Who’s stopping some new member on the forum writing to Mike and requesting the complete rare round port SU setup that you just donated? Nothing. Unfortunately. Nature of the beast. If I donate stuff then I have to have good faith that mike will make the right decision. Mike can always say no. I wouldn’t expect it to be a guaranteed gimme for parts listed.
And who will stop that same member selling that on for a few hundred? Nothing. I trust mike to make the right decision on who he passes it onto. If they then choose to abuse the service to make money, they will be ostracised by the community here. Prepare for the worst, expect the best.
Will there be some sort of guidelines on who can request parts? This is the hardest part. The concept relies on good faith and honesty. I would rely on Mikes good judgement. There is no actual way of measuring if someone is worthy via a forum. Post count, location age or any other piece of information available in the site is not a good indicator of a reasonable person. Perhaps the only requirement is a equal deposit equal return system. Not of dollar value necessarily, but of parts count. eg 2 chokes from a webber for 2 needles. Perhaps make it a trade only process. you offer what you have a trade for what you want. If people want parts without donating, then perhaps a market value can be paid, and the cash used to cover mikes time or donated to the website.
Who will update the parts catalogue and where will this catalogue be located/accessed? This will have to fall back to Mike unfortunately as he has the parts. A stickied thread listing the bits would be suitable. If he cant update the list due to other commitments, then the parts are not available. Expecting a photo catalogue is a bit much of mike. Having to take photos, upload them, with descriptions, and maintain that is alot of work. He is donating his time after all. A text listing should be enough. I think its far to say that if you are pulling apart your carbs to get a X part, then you should be okay with the parts contained, or at least have a manual of some sort. What happens when you go to a parts supplier? They also ask for the part numbers and descriptions as well. Asking for the tubey looking thing that goes about half way down the thingy near the left bit is a bit much to expect for a free service. Go and do some homework first.
How will the shipping costs be handled or does the donor also have to pay for postage or will the recipient have to pay a small fee to justify the costs? There is no easy way to make the costs fair without lumping heaps of work on mike. Poster pays postage, recipient pays.. I can’t think of a better way. Any costs incurred by mike in the postage process should be covered by the recipient. Nothing out of Mikes pocket
How many parts are recipients limited to and will Mike get swamped with junk? This is related to who is eligible for the system. If its a swap system based on value as determine by mike, then I would be happy with that. As for junk, mikes a hoarder so that’s not a problem, and its the “junk” that mike is trying to get.
Seeing as Webers are the most popular carbs won't these be the hardest to keep stock of? I don’t think the point is to be one stop shop, with guaranteed availability. If its there, then you can ask for it, if not bad luck. Carbs that you cant get parts for, can then be sent to mike for disassembly and distribution to others who still have them.
Who will assist Mike with identifying parts or is this all up to Mike? I can provide a Solex Mikuni parts catalogue? Anyone who is prepared to help is a start. If mike has too many parts to identify and nobody helps him, then the parts aren’t available till he gets around to it. He works full time like most of us, so his time is valuable. If the part is listed, then its available. If its not, regardless if its in box at his place, it not available.
For me, ill donate my unwanted parts to Mike with no worries, knowing that any decision that he makes will be the right one.
It’s a great concept that is fraught with danger and lots of potential work, but people tend to be tight fisted and not want to donate much. Suck it and see. If it doesent work, oh well, if it does then great.
