I'm not too good with electrics, but as you've figured out there's something wrong.

From what little I know the wire getting hot means that there is too much current flowing through it, which again as I understand means there's a short in the wiring.

Personally I'd guess it is a problem with the switch itself but as mentioned I'm not an auto-electrics expert :(
