I had the same problem when swapping a 56A 4 speed with a 60a 5 speed. I found it was the the fork not the carrier that needed to be changed.

My 56a + a12 from a stock 120y had the long carrier. In fact the carrier that came with my 60a was a short one. I used the stock 120y long carrier and the fork from the 60a to make it work.

I believe what you need is the 60 series clutch fork with an L shaped end. I am pretty sure the series of gearbox does not determine what carrier you use, rather it is the flywheel.
