We have our second baby due in three weeks and I’ve barely touched my 1000 coupe road car in the last three years. So, I’m considering selling her. I just wanted to test the waters and see if there is anybody out there who would appreciate her. Here’s what she is!

Body:
- 1970 Datsun 1000 coupe. Beige in colour. Small supermarket style dint in one front guard.
Interior:
- Perfect dash. No cracks anywhere. This car has been looked after!
- Has a polished alloy half-cage
- two near-new black SAAS bucket seats
- two black Sparco four point harnesses as well brand new lap-sash belts. Both sets are mounted permanently. Only the lap-sash is legal for road use due to dumb NSW road rules. Rear seats removed owing to cage and harnesses.
- Black aftermarket carpets
- Black SAAS sports steering wheel.
- Battery relocated to a metal box behind the passenger seat. New h/d electrical cables plus two kill switches as per Cams regs.
Engine:
- Original A10 removed and a stock A15 installed. Runs really well.
- Used new laser engine mounts, which are significantly stiffer than originals. This eliminates axle tramp.
- New electric fuel pump.
- Engine bay has rust around the battery mount. All rust treated, back to bare metal then painted in 2-pak. Colour is current commodore shade called ‘sandstorm effect’. It’s a mild bronzy looking metallic colour and suits the age of the car.
Gearbox:
- Original 4-speed. Shifts really well, feels great. I also have a Toyota T-50 gearbox that can go with the car. I haven’t got around to buying a dellow kit to mount it.
Brakes:
- 4-wheel disks with a new dual system master cylinder 13/16” bore.
- Front uses a pair of kitted VK commodore Girlock callipers and pads, new RTA approved braided flexible brake lines, and new slotted 258x20mm vented rotors. I have posted a photo on this website during the process.
- Rear uses R31 skyline Girlock callipers (also kitted), three new braided brake lines, new slotted 258x8mm solid rotors, and new custom handbrake cables.
- Dot-4 fluid. Works incredibly well.
Front suspension:
- Completely rebuilt using new upper and lower ball joints, new rod ends, new high tensile bolts and new polyurethane bushes (I had to make some of these).
- The front spring was stiffened up a bit with a thicker main leaf. Stock height, but room to be lowered by sawing the rubber blocks down. Monroe h/d shocks.
- New wheel bearings and seals on 1200 disk-type hubs.
- I have posted pictures on this website during this process.
Rear axle/suspension:
- Datsun 1200 Ute H165 axle. Rebuilt with new bearings and seals.
- Springs were stiffened up with an extra leaf from a sunny wagon. It feels like it matches the front pretty well.
- Standard rear shocks in very good nick. They obviously aren’t the originals.
Steering:
- Very low mileage steering box.
- Collapsible column. Unfortunately a bit worn. I’ve been looking to have it restored to new or replaced with a new one.
- New 1200 tie rod ends (bigger than 1000’s) and 1200 tie rods.
- Track rod is perfectly straight – never bent.
Wheels:
- Set of four Bathurst globes
Registration
- Full NSW Rego till Jan 2012.
- I have an engineers certificate covering all mods.
- Cheap to run, rego and insure. I insure through Shannons for $26/month and its insured for $8000 agreed value + ‘keep the wreck’ in a write-off.

I was building her up as a possible replacement body for the race car if ever we needed it. But, like I said, I’ve barely touched it in three or so years. I drive it around quite regularly and it’s an absolute blast on the road and gets heaps of looks.

Things left to do to make it really tidy:
- Replace or repair the steering column situation as explained above
- Temp gauge needs a new sender or a new gauge.
- Paint the exterior of the car if you wish (don’t really need to)
- Replace the rubbers around the wind-up windows as its perished. I was waiting the paint the exterior first.

Please don’t bother with ridiculously low offers.

Just to clear the air, I’m talking about my beige road car – not my race car, which is also a 1000 coupe and is in my avatar.
