If you need a regulator, I recommend going to NAPA and get a 35A internally-regulated alternator for 1980 Datsun 720 pickup (not the 60A, but the 35A). It is a direct bolt-on for the stock 1200 alternator and has more reliable solid state regulator built in.

This new-type alternator is less expensive here ($50) than a voltage regulator by itself!
