You don't HAVE to do it that way, but it's the most common way (modify the crossmember brackets).

Some guys use stock crossmember and make custom engine-side mounts (brackets).

Whichever kind of mount you go with, use the SR20 rubber isolators. Although with a stock crossmember, some guys use Ford Escort isolators or even A-series isolators.
