That's correct.

When you remove the compressor, all the Freon (gas/liquid) will come out. So first, de-pressurize the system with the Schrader valves (they look like tire air valve stems). Don't let it spray on you or breath it in.

As soon as you remove the compressor, cap the lines in the car to prevent much moisture from entering the system. If you leave it open for a day or two, you will need to replace the dryer mechanism and force-evacuate the system.

In USA is legal to replace old Freon with old Freon (unless regulations have changed), but it is hard to obtain the old kind. To put the new kind in means using a vacuum machine to get all the old out.
