It looks like two gaskets to me.

Clean the head face and themostat housing face well, and use one new gasket. No sealer is required. Just make sure you get every last bit of old gasket off. Use some alcohol to soften the old gasket bits. Scrape them off, but don't scar the aluminum.


But in this photo, it looks like the housing is cracked. You'll know once you remove it. When tightening the bolts, do not overtighten. Small bolts need small torque.
