Prices for car and trailer on the spirit of Tasmania are very very expensive. I went in peak season (mid January) and it cost me $2400 return with 3 people on the boat in the cheapest cabin available. They think that if you're not going over without a caravan your not spending money. So if you know of someone with an enclosed trailer registered as a motor home or caravan in some way it will slice that price by 60%.
Believe me i have been there a couple of times and it is not cheap and the boat ride is the most boring thing, try and go at night so you can sleep through it, day trips absolutely suck! We were going to freight the car over with sea road shipping as we had friends over there who would let us use their tow vehicle, but they wouldnt do it without a trailer for some reason. Int he end we just spent the $ and did it. Try you're luck with spirit of tasmania though. explain to them that its a race car. if you can get that through their head (may be a difficult task!) that the guy you're buying it off can drive it on and you can drive it off, then there shouldnt be a problem, that way it will cost $80 only one way for the car, but you may have to have a person on the boat with it, so you might have to fly over. try you're luck and see how you go!
