If it had to come down to this, I'd be using a grinder to remove the tray and leaving a 30mm strip around the edge and use sika-flex to adhere the new panel to the 30mm strip + the 3 horizontal support bars.

No gap for moisture to build and still structurally sound as sika-flex is awesome to use.
