Can be pad knocking too. I have this as I dont run backing plates.
If I forget to apply the brake pad goo on the back of the pad I find brake piston retracts the pad isnt retracted fully from the disk.
So when braking the piston travels through free air til it contacts the back of pad and this clunks when it bites the rotor some times.usually when cold
