Even a good battery with bad connections will appear dead. It will also start right up with jumper cables. Cleaning is the first thing to try when these symptoms occur.

If the alternator is charging (13.5 or higher volts) for at least 15 minutes and the cables are clean, and this still occurs then the battery is most likely worn out. Replace the battery.
