Yeah, most of the old original ones I have seen have been sort of chalky and brittle (ie. if you scraped the back with you nails it would leave a gouge). With a car of your standard I'd go the 'new' option. Or update to one from a modern car that sticks on the windscreen, but then you'd have to cover up the holes in the roof lining!
