Sounds to me like something has gone shortcircuit in the PS1's power suppy (inside the unit). We get tv's,vcr's, stereo's etc coming into the shop all the time with this kind of fault. The good news is that it is usally repairable, though being Sony it might be exspensive. Anyway take it into a repair shop and see what they say.
