You signed a pretty tight agreement when you bought the engine? I know I did when I bought my engines. The holding back of the ECU, is great for people who want to use the standard computer. But it puts people like you in a similar position to people who put aftermarket ECUs on their new S15 Silvias...(Out of Warranty). Seriously though, you put yourself in their shoes. Try selling 20 or 30 engines per week. Then having every second guy install an after market computer on their engines, that their cousin tuned for them. Oh maaate, see those flames out the exhaust. How about that anti-lag.. 25 pound boost mate. How would you feel?? Do you trust everyone you do business with? Look around at the import market.. who's involved... how many of them do you trust... seriously...
I practically lived at SSS throughout my teens and early 20s. Back when Stuey ran the show. I don't think the business has changed that much...I could be wrong.
I think you may be hardly done by, but where you are innocent, 99 others are guilty.
Seriously, import engines are a lucky dip. They aren't always a cheap option, but like Andrew D says, for another $500-600 your engine will last for a known length of time and you'll be good to go.
The import engines cost almost nothing from Japan, but the freight is not cheap. Could you buy and import an engine and gearbox for about $2000?..without the help of an expert importer..I doubt it.
Re-read your warranty..If you got the same computer printed reciept that I did, then it's clear.
Chris
ps. A new CA18DET engine, gearbox, wiring and ECU from Nissan would cost over $14,000. My CA18 has cost me at least that..and it's not even been started yet!
At $2000, it's cheap.
