Yes mine was the same, but because I chopped about 25mm off the main tube I also cut back that rod where the button was, which got rid of the two little humps and left me with a straight piece of rod to put a thread on. Then because the knob was screwed on, it retained the spring behind it.
Anyway just a suggestion that may or may not be to you liking. But if you do find an original replacement I'd be curious to know how it goes on. Does it twist on like the wiper knobs on the dash or does it glue on ?
