3D printing still needs a lot of post processing to get the nice cosmetic finish. We actually do a fair bit of this at work for prototypes. Many hours go into making a 3D print look good enough, smoothing, breaking edges, filling, buffing etc. But yes, it can be done. The other critical thing with a 3D print is choosing a material that's up to the application, car interiors in Australia get very hot. Common FDM materials (PLA/ ABS) are not up to this task.

The other piece of the puzzle is getting 3D scans of the parts you want to print and cleaning up the point clouds to get high quality 3D models. Often you need to paint the part in primer to get a half decent scan. Or you can spend more time tidying up the scan file.

Great tools for prototyping/ reverse engineering. You can do a lot with a phone camera and some calipers (vernier or digital).
