To build up any a-series engine to the level of a stock CA18DE or SR20DE (twin-cam engines) would cost more I think. Less expensive to get the twin-cam. However, more fabrication to swap them in. If you are paying, the a-series might be cheaper. If you do the swap yourself, go twin cam.
For you USA club members, if you don't need high RPM, try the KA24DE.
Best swap? Maybe the QR25DE, it's lighter than the SR20, stronger and more powerful. OK, this is theoretical as no one has swapped one into a 1200 yet.
