it's all about unsprung weight, or more importantly, the ratio of sprung to unsprung weight. Too heavy a diff (or strut, or wheel / tyre combo) in a light little 1200 will really make for bad handling!
A 9inch in a 1200 is appalingly bad in this regard.
Not such an issue if all you want to do is charge down the 1/4 mile, not break anything, and have any ratio you care to think of available for next to nothing!!
