If it was me, I'd find an H165 1200 ute housing and axles and run whichever of the C20 vanette, Bluey or B310 ratios I felt like on the day. The H190 is actually not mucho lighter than a 9 inch. You can get the alloy heads out of early vanettes, but the axles for these are exactly the same as the H165's. The late model alloy heads which let you run the 30mm axles are hard to find now... The 165 centre shouldnt break if you baffle the axle housings and increase the oil carrying capacity (move the filler plug up an inch!!) The axles will twist up first. I wouldnt run the 90mm wider C20 axle, unless you plan on increasing the front track by a corresponding amount. I'm just going thru the process of narrowing up a C20 housing, it's not too difficult to knock about 45mm of track out of it, and just shorten the axles. There's enough spline there....It makes the leaf spring hangers line up bangon too! fwd rims on a rwd car is a nono, unless you engineer everything else accordingly. The 1200's were designed with the KPI et al setup for the rwd offset. You'll stuff up the steering feel and scrub radius if you get this wrong.
The other option here is the good ole ford escort diff. They line up on the spring hangers beaut, and are roughly equivalent to an H165. gofast parts for them turn up all the time, so you'll find a cheap slippery no problem.
Gawd, what a novel this turned into!
