The original 56 series boxes are very, very fragile, I ran one behind a v strong A13, and it was a 'warm it up first on axles stands' kind of a gearbox.. It was stripped and rebuilt every year to keep it together.
The 60 series (B310) boxes are pretty good, stroke them along and they'll be good to you.
The 63 (stanza) box is the ultimate A series box, great ratios too, but hard to find now.
Dellow list a bellhousing to put the little Toyota box (T50?) behind the A motors. Probably the best bet in this day and age.

I understood the number was the centre distance between shafts too!
